Abstract

It is widely recognized that the supply of treated piped water is a basic utility that has to be provided for everyone. However, extensive and rapid development and population growth in major urban areas has resulted in the increased need for water. It is anticipated that the demand for water is expected to increase by 12 percent as a result of the rapid population growth and industrial development. The study will identify current monthly water usage of households in high (bungalow), medium (double storey terrace and semi-detached houses) and low cost housing (flat and single storey terrace) in planned residential areas in order to ascertain if the current standards for domestic water supply established by the water provider is still relevant in the light of rapid population growth. A survey research approach was used in the study and 100 households from 4 planned residential areas were interviewed. A pilot survey was undertaken to determine the validity of the questionnaire. In addition, secondary data and information was also obtained from Syarikat Air Johor, the water supply provider in the state of Johor. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the standards. Monthly water usage for domestic purpose of medium and low cost housing i.e. 49,701 and 42,900 litres respectively is high and exceeds the established standards i.e. 47,700 and 37,425 litres respectively. Water usage of high cost housing i.e. 49,701 litres per month is still within the established standards of 56,760 litres per month. Nevertheless, it is envisaged that water usage of high cost housing will increase and exceed the established standard. It is also predicted that domestic water usage will increase in the future. Hence, it is recommended that Syarikat Air Johor revise the standards for domestic water supply to planned residential areas to cope with increased demand from domestic consumers.
