Abstract

Feeding of rice husk in 2D cold fluidized bed has been studied with a dimension of 0.2 x 0.1 m Perspex sheet rig. Problem arises while feeding rice husk in a fluidized bed for combustion. For a bed to sustain the isothermal condition and remove the temperature gradient which might make the bed to defluidize, the study of rice husk feeding characteristic is important. It is seen that due to peculiar characteristic of rice husk the feeding is not continuous in a fluidized bed. This results in a sudden drop of bed temperature and also the freeboard temperature. Thus it was seen that a good feeding can sustain the fluidized bed temperature. Angles from 0 to 75 ° were used to study the feeding characteristic of rice husk at a feeding point of 0.8 m above the bed surface. In addition the straight or horizontal feeding was studied at one-third and half the length of the fluidized bed column. The critical angle at which rice husk just slide was found to be 35°. Rice husk feeding characteristic was found to be at left wall at a distance of 0.4, 0.5 m from the feeding point for 45°, 60° respectively and at centre of bed for 75 °. The sliding speed of rice husk was faster at 60 and 75 ° than 45 °. The above result concluded that for even distribution of rice husk the feeding angle should be greater than 75 ° and straight feeding at a position half of the length of fluidized column. The main conclusion is that. there is a lack of detailed literature covering this type of work, emphasizing the need of detailed research work for feeding characteristics of biomass materials.
