Water is one of the most important commodities in industry. However, the awareness of the risk towards the environment resulting from stricter environmental regulations, scarcity of quality industrial water and the rising cost of wastewater treatment, has produced a growing interest in process plants to reduce their water usage. Synthesis of grassroots water utilisation networks based on Pinch Analysis has been rather well established. In contrast, less work has been done on retrofit of the existing water network. The development of a systematic procedure for retrofit of water network which is industrially very general as well as important is therefore required. This research shows that the mass exchange networks (MENs) retrofit can be successfully adapted into retrofit of water network with mass transfer processes. A systematic procedure involving two key steps namely utility (water) targeting and network design have been established. In the targeting stage, the established grassroots method of WPA to determine fresh water and wastewater targets and capital cost targets are applied. The retrofit targets are achieved via a savings versus investment plot which represents the potential ultimate utility savings for a particular capital expenditure. Lastly the existing network is retrofitted to meet the targets. Through the example applied, it is proven that this methodology allows the network design to achieve the targets to be approached to within 8%.
