Significant factors of energy consumption behaviour pattern among Malaysian higher education institutions students

Abstract

With Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) aim of reducing energy consumption, a behavioural approach is one of the most effective methods. However, before this method can be used, it is important to understand the fundamental aspect of the energy consu ption behaviour in the HEIs. Questions such as types of energy consumption pattern that exist; systematic assessment method of energy consumption pattern; and significant factors of the patterns; are the first need to be answered. Hence, the objective of this paper is to determine the significant factors of energy consumption patterns among Malaysian HEIs students. 1,009 students from four universities in Malaysia were analysed. Based on the findings, three types of energy consumption pattern were examined, namely "High", "Low" and "Conserve" energy user. Significant factors for "High" energy user are the environmental concern (<0.93∗∗), and activity and device (.0∗) factors; "Low" energy user are the building regulation (<0.56∗∗), activity device (<.0∗) factors; and finally "Conserve" energy user which significant to building regulation (<.0∗), environmental concern (<.0.5∗∗), social aspiration (<.0.08∗), education (<.046∗), activity and device (<.0∗).
