Fiber couplers, as a passive device splitting power are greatly used in telecommunication and industrial purposes where the effective power is mainly determined by coupling coefficient. To describe the characterization of mechanical processes of coupled fibers, a fusion of two SMF-28eÂ® couplers is set and enables to obtain coupling coefficient range from a distribution of coupling ratio and compared with the empirical formula. The result found from experimental work is evaluated with a function of separation fiber axis and refractive index. There is a relationship between coupling coefficient and refractive index to both core and cladding of fiber. Comparing coupling coefficient range with a theory, a refractive index range can be determined. Both core and cladding refractive index are estimated for post fusion fibers. The result shows a comparison between experiment and theory and gives good agreement. Keywords: single mode fiber, coupling ratio, coupling length, coupling coefficient, refractive index
