Abstract

This study investigates the characteristic of rice straw/high density polyethylene injection grade at various rice straw compositions. Rice straw is produced as by product of rice cultivation and is unique relative to other cereal straws in being high lignin and high in silica. A lignocellulosic material rice straw was used as the fiber in the biocomposites and high density polyethylene (HDPE) injection grade as the matrix. Rice straw was oven dried at 70°C for 24 hours, grinded and sieved to obtain the 250um in particle size. A counter rotating twin shaft high speed mixer was utilized to mix the rice straw and HDPE. The blends were then compounded on corotating and intermeshing twin screw extruder. Various formulations were prepared 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of fiber contents. The compounded biocomposite were injection mold into test specimens to analyse their process ability after analyzing the compound for its melt flow index (MFI). Chemical structure of the biocomposite was analyzed on FTIR whereas the thermal characteristic on the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The water absorption characteristic was also determined. MH indicates that up to 50% rice straw loading, the biocomposite is able to be injected and within the injection grade specification. The higher the rice straw content, the lest thermally stable th biocomposite becomes and the lower is the melting point. Thermal behaviour also indicated that the suitability of processing HDPE/rice straw biocomposite is below 200°C depending on the rice straw composite.
