This paper describes a team-based approach that was developed and implemented to help computer science students improve their database systems development. The study of database is typically core in undergraduate courses related to computer science. Students are often assigned a semester-long project accompanies the course topics, where they perform software development life-cycle activities to develop a single database system. In this paper, the authors experience, observations and lessons learned in teaching database course using a team-based approach are discussed. It presents some preliminary results of this work that seems to suggest that a team-based approach is indeed an effective way to teach database concepts to computer science students, and therefore could be considered as the best practice associated with such teaching.
