Abstract

The taste sensory analysis study involved tap and bottled mineral drinking water, which were assessed blindly by the consumer panels. This preliminary study assessed and compared the taste quality level of tap waters from Gunung Pulai and Sungai Layang water treatment plants and also assessed and compared them with two different brands of bottled mineral waters. The consumer panels were divided into two groups that consisted of six persons each. Flavour Rating Assessment (FRA) and Flavour Threshold Test (FTT) methods were used as described in the 'Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater'. The data obtained were analysed statistically using the central tendency limit, z-test and ANOVA. Generally all water samples can be accepted as daily drinking water since the mean of rating scores fell within the 3-4 levels. FRA results indicate that insignificant differences exist between the Gunung Pulai tap water and bottled mineral water samples and significance different exists between Sungai Layang tap water and bottled mineral water samples. The Flavour Threshold Number (FTN) results were not detected in the water samples except the E, F and G samples originating from Sungai Layang tap water. Based on the European Community Directive standard, the FTN obtained does not exceed the standard.
