Abstract

The construction industry plays a major role in our country’s economic growth. However, the industry is not without weaknesses. The challenges often occur in the area of productivity, efficiency of work, quality of work and the delivery of work. The intensive use of foreign unskilled workers, low technology equipments and out-of-dated construction methods, have eventually caused low productivity and inefficiency of work at construction site. IBS is one of the improved building systems that are being introduced in the construction industry, to achieve the target of faster completion with mass production of the building elements in places out of its final location in a building. A study was conducted to analyse ways to improve the implementation of IBS in terms of IBS scheduling at site for public buildings especially schools in our country. A comparison between the scheduling of both the conventional method and the proposed IBS method was carried out using Microsoft Project. The critical outputs in managing the scheduling of project such as time, labour productivity and task factor were clearly analysed. Types of lifting system were identified to ensure highest productivity and efficiency of work at site. Lastly, comparative check of proposed new conceptual school building utilising standard IBS components with Uniform Building By-Law 1984 were also carried out in this study.
