Data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Radiometer (MODIS) is currently being used to generate the annual net primary productivity (NPP) at global scale. Validation of this product requires accurate ground measurements and modeling methods. Currently, eddy covariance flux tower measurements which utilize a climate model are frequently used by most researchers to assess the MODIS NPP products. Moreover, validation of the MODIS NPP product has been restricted to a limited number of test sites and it is very important to widen the network of validation sites. In this study, direct on-ground NPP measurements quoted from a test site in Japan using a summation method have been used to evaluate the MODIS NPP product for this location. The summation method used involves the summation of the tree growth increment, litter production and grazed amount. Three years’ MODIS satellite data (2004, 2005 and 2006) have been assessed using the Monteith equation for the purpose of this study. Comparisons have then been made between the results of the summation method and the Monteith equation. The result shows that the trend of annual NPP from two types of measurements is comparable with an RMSE of 0.8 t ha-1yr-1.
