Abstract

The effect of breakdown voltage on coupling ratio of fiber coupler has been experimentally and theoretically studied. It has been calculated by developing pockel's effect. The experiment is done to investigate dc-voltage effect to the coupling ratio by designing fusion region of fabricated 1X2 SMF-28e (R) couplers between two dielectric plates. An optical power is launched to input port of fiber 1, and then the output powers are measured. The change of coupling ratio significantly depends on separation between two plates. By increasing dc-voltage from 10 Volt to 1000 Volt with separation between two plates is 2.5 mm, the coupling ratio increases from 0.48 to 0.525. This change is due to the breakdown voltage imposed the electric field corresponding to the refractive index of Silicon Dioxide. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B. V.
