Abstract
This study aims to identify the practices of Islamic leadership principles among the principals of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA). The study also identifies whether the attributes of a Professional Learning Community exist within the SMKA Community. The study also reviews which of the principles of Islamic leadership becomes a significant predictor to the implementation of the attributes of Professional Learning Community. Employing a mixed-method explanatory sequential design, this study has two phases. In the first phase, quantitative research is done and the data obtained served as a primary source of the study. The second phase of the study involved the gathering of qualitative data which act as support data. The instrument used in this study includes questionnaires, interviews and observations. In the pilot study, the questionnaire surveying the principles of Islamic leadership recorded the internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha) 0.97 while the School Professional Staff as Learning Community Questionnaire has the internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha) 0.96. The respondents in this study were 8 principals, 8 senior-assistant teachers, and 610 teachers who represent SMKA from the north, east, west and south of Peninsular Malaysia. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS ver.18 and software AMOS 18 Structural Equation Modeling approach. The study found that the SMKA principals have incorporated Islamic leadership principles in their leadership practices. All the principles of Islamic leadership recorded high mean score of more than 4.01. The attributes of Professional Learning Community were found to be present in these schools with the mean score of 3.96 to 4.34. Beta coefficient value shows all of the principles of Islamic leadership as significant predictors to the formation of the attributes Professional Learning Community. The study concluded that the practices of Islamic leadership premised on the Islamic teachings not only able to form a strong community living by the Islamic values and principles but also manage to lead the continuous change that underlies the agenda of educational improvement in the country.
