Abstract

Tourism is one of the industries with a strong effect on economy. Traveling information gives a lot of knowledge and guide to tourists. Geographical Information System (GIS) network analysis is a powerful tool to identify the best route for tourists. This research focus as on finding a suitable route for tourists in the East Coast of Malaysia using their personal transport, based on a powerful GIS route analysis. The software used in this research are Visual Basic, Mapobjects, Macromedia Flash MX, Microsoft Access, AutoCAD Map and ArcView. The impedance factors that were considered are shortest path, shortest time and tourism impedance factor i.e. facilities and places of interest. Parameter values for each facility and places of interest were obtained from questionnaire analysis. Every facility and places of interest were given weightage according to its importance to tourists. The results were used in the tourism application (TourGIS). Five routes were selected and travel distance and petrol cost, travel time and number of junctions of the routes were compared. An evaluation by the users was carried out on the application. A powerful GIS network analysis and incorporation of accurate data and impedance factor will produce a suitable route for tourists. This research will help tourists to plan and guide their journey route. TourGIS can be used in information kiosk at tourism information centers, places of interest and rest areas.
