Abstract

This research makes a preliminary observation based on the perception and the background of Malaysians society to discover the extent to which the concept of alternative or flexible work can be adapted in Malaysia. The concept of alternative or flexible work has been initiated by some scholars and professionals since the 1980's and suggested that workplace should be viewed from a new perspective that is more responsive to current developments and to take opportunity on the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT). This application allows us to perform our tasks without necessarily to be in the office. Although the alternative workplace which supported by the 'ICT' is recognized in Western countries, but the potential effectiveness, acceptance and implementation of the concept are still limited. There are some scholars who aired their perspectives that flexible workplace that built on the application of 'ICT' may not be adapted by all organization, culture and society. Therefore this study was conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the alternative workplace in this country. Results shown that although the nature of work in this country is similar to the Western countries, the practice of using alternative workplace is relatively low or almost none. However, given the opportunity to do so, a relatively high percentage of the respondents are interested with the concept of this alternative workplace. The study also found that there are several similar factors that support the intention to work using alternative workplace to that had been studied in the western countries. Although there are also some factors that are not similar with the studies that had been conducted in Western countries, in general, this research suggests that the concept of alternative workplace has the potential to be adapted in this country.
