Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the type of items (multiple choice item and essay item) with students achievement. This study also examine the background of the respondents (gender, race, religion, education and SSE of parents) in student achievement.A total of 201 form four students were randomly selected from secondary school of Johor Bahru District. The data collected was processed and analyzed using computer software SPSS Version 11.5. Results showed that students achievement differs significantly with their background. Background of the respondents ( race, religion, education of father) have significant differences with the essay item score, while the other factor found not to affect the student achievement.
