Abstract

Lately, place identity and meaning of a place become important issue in environment psychology, architecture, urban planning and urban design. Change and loss of physical characteristic from urban development that exponential developing has caused lost of valuable physical element and replaced with other elements that do not give meaning to people. Hence, places that have significant value need to be preserved and taking care so that people interaction that existed can be maintained. In addition, there is no approach in considering local resident's opinion to change on their preferred place would affect on meaning and place attachment. People experience on place play important role that is important in this study. Therefore, this study considered two physical elements that are important especially in historic town which are municipal market and bazaar in forming bond with the people. Questionnaires and interviews were being conducted on residents of Kampung Jawa with 30 respondents involved in questionnaires and 12 participants involved in interviews session. The results from the survey questionnaire were analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Product and Services Solutions) version 16 and for interview were analyzed using content analysis. The result from studies on place concept and place attachment shows (a) municipal market and bazaar is physical element; (b) physical properties and social attributes that exist; (c) municipal market and bazaar as public place; and (d) change on municipal market and bazaar change the image of Kampung Jawa. This study shows residents have developed deep attachment to municipal market and bazaar, however, change and loss of physical character are factors that caused placelessness in Kampung Jawa. This study also shows that residents want a new market to replace municipal market that was demolished because they have greater place attachment towards this element. Hence, this study gives opportunity to architects, landscape architects and planners in creating better place in take into account relationship between people with a place.
