The ever increasing demand for data bandwidth has spurred the need for next generation all optical switches for replacing the current electronic based switch used in fiber optic network. Our group has identified Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) and polymer waveguide based technology to be a potential candidate in realizing an optical switch. For MEMS portion, electrostatic actuated cantilever based design is used as the core design. The Multi User MEMS Processes (MUMPS) fabrication process has been outsourced for the first prototype. The work also covers the design of the switch, developing an analytical model for the switch (electrostatic pull-in voltage analysis), finite element method (FEM) simulation, actual device layout using Tanner’s L-Edit software, and finally measurement and analysis of the device. The analysis shows that a device with operating voltage below 20V can be achieved with MUMPS technology. For polymer portion, the major focus of this research is to investigate the design o f 2x2 optical switch and coupler utilizing HD 4000 polymer material for in-house fabrication.
