Abstract

This paper presents a case study of analyzing Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic over the IP-based FKE Local Area Network (LAN) using COMNET III. The study is done to investigate the feasibility of transmitting VoIP packets stream over the network. Through the analysis, the important characteristics of VoIP traffic such as end-to-end delay in different background traffics, different packet sizes and packet loss due to buffer size will be determined and compared with the values recommended by ITU-T for voice conversation (G.114 Recommendation). The results show that packet size of less than 320 bytes will have the total end-to-end delay of less than 150ms values which is the maximum latency value in G.114 recommendation. For packet loss of less than 5%, the buffer size has to be kept larger than 5Kbytes
