In our projects be entitled “The investigation of zero-birefringence of Benzocyclobutene Rib Optical Waveguides” that was still in progress, there are several essential steps that must be passed through by it. These steps among them was modeling and design, fabrications, characterization of the BCB 4024-40 polymer material, and experiment set-up, data collection and measurement. Material characterization processes in terms of its physical and optical properties has become an integral part of research for the understanding of material behaviour and performance under operating conditions . These characterization processes will normally require the material to be in planar or film forms . The BCB 4024-40 polymer before can be further usable, it needs to be characterized for the refractive index, film thickness and optical loss as this will indicate the material’s suitability in light guiding application. The material refractive index was one of the important factors to be known. One of the methods that a widely used tool for refractive index measurements in planar waveguide was the prism coupling method.
