Due to the advantages of using optical signals, researchers and engineers have been showing great enthusiasm in the study and development of optical devices. The basic elements of optical devices is optical waveguide. Researches and investigations on optical waveguides form the foundation works for the implementations of more complicated devices such as beam splitters, amplifiers, switches, directional couplers and semiconductor laser devices. The microelectronic devices and miniature optical components both exhibit similarity in the dielectric material used and production process. Therefore, in 1966 Anderson  suggested that a microfabrication technology could be developed for single mode optical devices. It was in 1969 Miller  introduced the term Integrated Optics for this new area. The concept of integrated optics involves the realization of optical and electro-optical elements which may be integrated in the large numbers on to a single substrate .
