Abstract

In the design of steel beam, the type of connections will determine whether the beam is design as simple, semi-continuous, or continuous construction. Connections are usually designed as pinned which associated with simple construction or rigid which is associated with continuous construction. However, the actual behaviour falls between these two extreme cases. The use of partial strength or semi-rigid connections has been encouraged by codes and studies on the matter known as semi-continuous construction have proven that substantial savings in steel weight of the overall construction. The objective of this paper is to present the performance of full scale testing of steel beam with partial strength connections with trapezoid web profiled (TWP) steel sections as beam connected to hot-rolled British section as column. The TWP steel section is a built up section where the flange is designed using S355 steel section and the web is designed using S275 steel section. Two tests have been carried out for beam with flush and extended end-plate connections as partial strength connections. Studies have shown that the use of partial strength connections in semi-continuous construction result in significant saving in steel weight. The use of partial strength reduces the deflection of the beam as suggested by Steel Construction Institute. The moment resistances and the deflection of the beam presented in this paper showed good agreement between experimental values and the predicted values.
