Abstract

Since the advent of reinforced earth technology, by Vidal in 1966, a large number of reinforced structures have been constructed throughout the world, for the purpose of retaining soils. A retaining wall helps in maintaining the ground surface at different elevations on either side of it. Without such a structure, the soil at the higher elevation would tend to move down until it acquires its natural, stable configuration. Retaining walls are designed to withstand lateral earth pressure as well as any dead load, live load, vehicle load, or uniform surcharge acting over the retained soil. An innovative method of retaining wall construction has been proposed and the method has been applied in the construction of a sport complex in Shiraz, the capital of Fars province, Iran. The sport complex was constructed 7 m below the ground level to ensure that the archaeological aspect of an old existing building and long-standing trees, located around the project area could be preserved. The use of a new innovative method called “steel frame with concrete panel” gives a lot of advantages, such as low cost, fast construction speed and no effect on the integrity of nearby structures and trees. The system consists of a continuous thin wall around the project perimeter, constructed from upper level to the lower level with excavation works simultaneously. However, like other methods, this method also has some disadvantages such as the lack of efficiency for long span, as experienced in a case study. This paper describes the concept and construction method of this new retaining wall type, and the problem occurred in the selected case study.
