Prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) has been widely used for stabilizing soft soil. The design of such treatment is usually based on the results of site investigation and monitoring is required to ensure the performance of the ground treated soil. This paper presents a case study of highway embankment on PVD treated soil. Site investigation data was collected to obtain the thickness of soft soil deposit as well as the shear strength and consolidation properties of the soil. Numerical analysis was performed by modeling the embankment in finite element code PLAXIS v7.2 utilizing an equivalent vertical permeability of the drain to simulate plain strain condition based on Terzaghi’s average degree of vertical consolidation. The deformation and rate of settlement of soft clay beneath the embankment predicted by finite element program is compared with the field measurement data and final settlement prediction using Asaoka method. Good agreement between the settlement prediction and the actual measurement in terms of time to reach 90% consolidation was achieved when diameter ratio of 2 and permeability ratio of 6 was used in the finite element analysis while the effect of well resistance is insignificant.
