Abstract

In this paper, the influence of hull shape and ground effect on the aerodynamic characters from WIG Catamaran with wing of NACA 6409 section was numerically studied. The simulation of WIG Catamaran was performed by Three Dimensional (3D) Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). Lift coefficient and lift to drag ratio were determined on variation of angle of attacks and two ground clearances (h/c=0.4 and infinity). The k-? SST turbulent model was used in CFD model. In order to validate the numerical results, the CFD simulations of wing of NACA 6409 section (wing only) were compared with experimental data published by previous researcher. Next, the CFD simulations were perform on wing with hulls of WIG Catamaran during ground effect h/c=0.4 and h/c=infinity. The results of the CFD simulation indicate a reduction on lift to drag ratio which is caused by hull shape of WIG Catamaran, as well as there are enhancement on lift coefficient and lift to drag ratio when flying in proximity to the ground (water surface).
