Abstract

This paper presents back-analysis of rainfall induced two slope failures occurred in Kota Kinabalu Sabah using PERISI (Preliminary Evaluation of Rainfall-Induced Slope Instability) program. The program integrates the extreme rainfall characteristics which is a function of geographical location and soil characteristics in the analysis of slope stability. By analyzing the rainfall pattern, one can predict slope failure in advance. Hence, Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curve for Kota Kinabalu for ten year return period was developed for this study based on 30 year data. Geometry and soil data was obtained from site investigation performed on the site. The soils at Site 1 and 2 are classified as sandy SILT and Highly Plastic CLAY respectively. This study showed that the response of soil to rainfall infiltration differs between the two slopes. The critical rainfall duration of rainfall causing instability is affected by the soil’s moisture retention ability and permeability. Analysis showed that combination of 1day major rainfall and 14 day antecedent was found to cause slope failure in Site 1 while 30 days cumulative rainfall is required for slope at Site 2 to reach failure.
