Abstract

This chapter presenting a introductory study on planar lightwave (PLC-type) circuit of variable optical attenuator (VOA). Several related works have been reviewed and it is much useful as the first stage to develop the VOA. The VOA has been reviewed based on its basic structure, material used, attenuation range, and power consumption and insertion loss. Based on the this review work, we proposed our future work which is to be based on hybrid BCB 4024 polymer-silica based on pertinent advantages offered by this material system.
