Abstract

This paper represents an alternative approach on designing PSS for a Single Machine and Infinite Bus (SMIB) system based on sliding mode control (SMC) technique. SMIB system is chosen as it is such a simple configuration which is extremely useful in understanding basic effects and concepts of PSS. In order to test the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulation will be carried out to analyze the small signal stability characteristics of the system about the steady state operating condition following the loss of a transmission line.
