Abstract

Continuously faces corrosion attack although the structure is provided with corrosion protection and control. As the pipeline ages. it can easily corrode because of the long contact with the corrosive environment that can affect their protection behavior. Corrosion is an electro chemical process where it converts metal into various compounds that usually have much less mechanical and chemical resistance than the metal which disintegrates so that the object is destroyed. Marine pipelines are severely exposed to corrosive environment such as seawater salinity and marine growth effect which in later stage can trigger corrosion on the external surface. Nevertheless. this state is not that critical since marine pipelines are usually well coated with robust protection system. The internal corrosion in fact is giving more serious threat to the pipeline integrity which under serious circumstances can causes leakage or even bursting. In addition to the less robust protection system together with the untreated condition of the flown product, pipeline internal condition technically is prone to corrosion attack internally. To predict the complex behaviour of corrosion growth inside the pipeline. there are several models developed empirically or theoretically by researchers and engineers with main goal to assist pipeline owners in monitoring the metal loss rate inside the pipelines. Hence, facilitate the decision-making process related to sustainable and more proper maintenance and inspection scheme. The paper give a thorough review on the establishment of corrosion models tailored for internal condition of marine pipelines. A critical discussion is focused on the parameters considered. technical assumption. model reliability and complexity, probabilistic behaviour and empirical aspect. Technical wise, the review may give c!earer idea on the reliability of the available corrosion model and depict how the models can be fully optimized for pipeline integrity prediction purpose.
