Abstract

Capturing and modelling 3D information to produce models for visualization reason is a big challenge coming together with the trend and demand of 3D city models in the market. A number of techniques and technologies include EDM, GPS, photogrammetric and remote sensing applications are now in use. In this project; 3D modelling using Topcon robotic total station with laser scanning ability is discussed. Using laser scanning technique, it shorten the time consumes on site and helps user to acquire 3D point clouds data in a more accurate, faster way. This project introduces and demonstrates the use of laser scanning technique in Topcon Imaging Station (IS) to generate 3D building model. The case study building is Balai Cerap, one of the landmarks building in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and A Famosa in Malacca. Balai Cerap is located in the main campus of UTM at Skudai, Johor while A Famosa is a heritage structure well known in Malacca. Through this project, the use of module/function of a robotic total station, Topcon Imaging Station (IS), is explained. Moreover, data from IS is processed using Image Master Software and produced the desired 3D building model. The texture mapping was applied to the model produced as an enhancement to the model for visualization purposes.
