Abstract
The end-of-life vehicles (ELV) problems have emerged as a critical subject in the rapidly expanding automobile business. However, the implementation of effective remanufacturing management practices and approaches in ELV for sustainable development is still hindered by various challenges. This study utilizes comprehensive content analysis to critically review the remanufacturing management approaches and applications in ELV. 43 relevant ELV remanufacturing studies from the year 2011 to 2023 were selected and categorized into four main themes: ELV recycling/remanufacturing management system, ELV remanufacturing/recycling strategies or practices, design for remanufacturing/recycling, and ELV remanufacturing policy/regulation/directive. From the literature review analysis, the connection between these main themes is still inadequate, and there are no appropriate application techniques to implement ELV remanufacturing. The proposed integrated conceptual model consists of these four main themes and is connected with the three key drivers (ELV guidelines, procedures and standards), including the roles of relevant ELV players that can enhance the sustainable remanufacturing management approaches and applications in ELV. The novelty of this study lies in these four main themes that are developed based on the three critical levels (products, processes, and systems) of sustainable development in terms of management approaches for ELV industrial applications. The model provides high-level strategies for the remanufacturers and the relevant ELV players to improve the ELV remanufacturing business performance in accordance with industry best practices.
