Abstract

Conventional methods in the work of documenting historical objects practice the use of paper filing methods where pictures of historic objects are recorded as hard copies. This method is vulnerable to destruction due to the materials used. This paper describes the use of LiDAR technology for the documentation of historical object known as historical charcoal chamber. The historical charcoal chamber is one of the historical monuments located at Kubak Badak Geotrail, Langkawi Island geopark area, claimed to be approximately 150 years old. It was made by the bricks and were used to create coals from the woods from the surrounding mangrove trees. The methodology of the research begins with data collection process. The LiDAR technology used for the data collection process is a terrestrial LiDAR known as Topcon GLS2000. The scanning process involved four scanning stations with medium scanning resolutions. The second part of the methodology involved data pre-processing where the raw scanning data involved with registration and cleaning process. The post-processing part involved the generation of colored point clouds and the photo-realistic three-dimensional model of the charcoal chamber. This paper also shows how the 3D model of the charcoal chamber historic object is used to predict the full shape of the historic charcoal chamber which can be used in history subject education in the future.
