Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based flying ad-hoc networks (FANETs) can provide diversity using cooperative relaying (CR) strategies. By utilizing CR, the performance of the system can be improved and several issues brought on by the deployment area and application needs can be fixed. The signal components travelling on various paths through relays can be combined using the maximal ratio combining (MRC) technique. Due to the presence of additional choices for the signal to reach its destination, the probability of a system outage diminishes as the number of relays increases, however the system becomes complex and expensive. The CR system's resource efficiency can be improved through the selection of an appropriate relaying UAV among those that are available. The FANET system parameters, UAV characteristics, target environmental factors, and application requirements show a significant impact in selecting suitable relay. The channel assignment algorithms are expected to take these considerations into account. This study looks at channel assignment strategies classifying them and evaluating their suitability for UAVs assisted FANETs. It assesses the effectiveness of the selection schemes in terms of the performance parameters and their limitations emphasizing relevant open research questions, which could serve as a basis for future relay selection algorithms.
