Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to develop hybrid AZ80/BN + CeO2 surface composite by friction stir processing (FSP). The impact of the pin shape on the metallurgical and mechanical properties is discussed. The microstructural features were studied employing Optical microscopy (OM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that the agglomeration of reinforcement particles was considerably reduced when the pin shape was changed from cylindrical to conical and consequently improved particle dispersion in the stir zone. Wear resistance and the local shear strength are also increased by the conical pin in comparing cylindrical pin, which can be ascribed to the better distribution of CeO2 + BN within the stir zone.
