Abstract

Implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in the classroom meets the needs of the education in the 21st centuries to form a dynamic and balanced generation in all aspects of life. However, there are many challenges that exist in order to implement HOTS effectively. This study aims to identify the challenges in implementing HOTS by Mathematics teachers. The study focuses three aspects on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. The curricular aspect was focused in this study in order to explore and comprehend the existing curriculum. The pedagogy aspect was highlighted to identify the pedagogical knowledge possessed by teachers in implementing HOTS. Finally, the aspect of assessment was taken into consideration as it gauged the knowledge of teachers in evaluating the input given to pupils. A total of 100 respondents were involved from primary schools in the district of Kota Tinggi, Johor for this study. Questionnaire instrument that consists of four sections and the Likert scale was the only instrument used in this study. Data was analyzed using frequency and percentage. The findings of the study shed light on the crucial aspects that are the main challenges faced by primary school Mathematics teachers in implementing the practice of HOTS. Via this research, the researcher was capable of understanding the importance of having materials and sources in enabling the pedagogical continuation when implementing HOTS oriented curriculum. For the pedagogical aspect, teachers’ knowledge in subject content and pedagogy should be systematically emphasized. This is to allow them to realise their roles as teachers who are equipped to manage the differences in pupils when implementing HOTS. Evaluation, assessment and grading aspects are crucial and should be grasped due to the differences, increasing alternative assessments and teachers’ role in determining classroom assessments and grades. The research also provide opportunity to the researcher in carrying out further study regarding the aspects of challenges to broad the horizon of the research, hence evaluating and analysing of the aspects comprehensively.
