Abstract

One learning strategy that has proven to be suitable for enhancing student learning in Science is the learning strategy through “Hands-On” activities, in line with the needs of 21st century education which requires our students to be highly competitive. To realize the educational goals of our country, the competence of teachers in implementing learning activities in a "Hands-On" plays a very important role. Since the implementation of KSSR and KSSM in 2011, all teachers in Malaysia have been trained and advised to always adopt student -centered teaching and learning methods where all students should be given the opportunity to experience and appreciate the content of the curriculum they learn. The objective of this study is to identify the level of teacher competence in the implementation of learning activities in a "Hands-On" and the relationship between the level of teacher competence with the level of implementation of learning activities. In addition, the researcher also studied the differences in the level of implementation of learning activities in "Hands-On" according to the teacher's teaching experience, teacher's gender and the number of students in the class. Researchers also analyzed information on the problems faced by teachers while conducting "Hands-On" activities in Science subjects in primary schools. In this study, the purposeful sampling method was used by the researcher to collect data and information from 152 Science teachers who came from primary schools in the district of Kluang. The study design was quantitative descriptive. This descriptive study used a questionnaire method to collect the required data from the respondents. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the level of implementation of learning activities in "Hands-On" according to the teacher's teaching experience, teacher gender and the number of students in the class. Because the study data showed that it was not normally distributed, Spearman correlation analysis was conducted and the results showed that there was a weak positive relationship between the level of teacher competence and the level of implementation of learning activities in "Hands-On". This is quite interesting and can be used as a new study to see and explore the causes that occur through qualitative methods.
